75: A Personal Best

Last year I was going for a personal best – to read 75 books excluding kids and illustrated books.

I got to 73.

It looked like I wasn’t even going to make it that far, with a far amount of My Beautiful Genome still to go, I decided on the ‘quick win’ approach and went the ‘easy reads’ of – Unholy NightThe Strange Case of Finley Jayne – an ebook prequel to The Girl with the Steel Corset, and the very funny The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists.

But, I can make it to 75 – if I include my favourite kids book and illustrated book read during 2012:

There are No Cats in this Book (sequel to There are Cats in this Book) – a fun and very interactive lift-the-flap kids book, where the cats attempt to get out of the book to go on an adventure.

Hot Guys and Baby Animals – yes, yes, I know what you are thinking – really? that’s a book? It is, and it is exactly what you think it is, hot guys photographed with baby animals, with each photo a caption introducing both the guy and the animal with an insightful ‘what they like’. It’s not a long read, but I found it enjoyable.

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making

Do I have a ‘Best Book for 2012’?

Yes, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairlyland in a Ship of Her Own Making – a whimsical, fun and somehow sophisticated read.

Am I going to go for a new PB this year?

Yes – I’m a bit competitive. But I’m not going to set a number (other than the ones for the Australian Women Writers Challenge),  instead this year I’m going to include kids and illustrated books in the list and just see how many I get through.
