I stumbled across this little gem, Juliet by Anne Fortier, whilst doing returns and put it down on my “books I want to read” list (yes I really have one of those!) When my pile of “one’s I’m currently reading” got a little low I ordered it in not remembering why I wanted it.
The first thing I noticed is the new cover, it had a recommendation by two of my favourite authors Alison Weir and Sara Gruen. Bonus!
After reading the first 1/2 of the first chapter I was sucked into the world of generations of Salimbeni’s, Marescotti’s and Tolomei’s. Set in Siena and NOT Verona, a 600 year old mystery left behind by the real Romeo and Juliet is uncovered.
This book had everything. There was the obvious love story but there was also a lot of cloak and dagger, twists and turns and a lot of secrets and surprises.
This book was written in almost 2 parts. Alongside the real Romeo and Juliet story (with a much different death scene) runs the story of Alessandro and Giulietta- both households both alike in dignity, but both after the mysterious treasure Romeo and Juliet have left 600 years before. Together they must break the curse left behind from the star crossed lovers unhappy ending, without giving too much away to the other.
Anne Fortier writes beautiful characters you will easily fall in love with even though you never know if they are the good guy or the bad guy right till the end.
I read this book in 2 days because I couldn’t put it down.
