Mateship is Stella

Mateship with BirdsCongratulations to Carrie Tiffany who has won the inaugural Stella Prize for her second novel, Mateship with Birds.

Launched in 2013 the Stella Prize recognises the best fiction released by an Australian Women Writer during 2012, and with six great titles on the shortlist the judges decision was a hard one.

The prize was announced and presented at event in Melbourne last night where Tiffany had this to say:

“It is astonishing and lovely to be the first recipient of this new prize. The Stella Prize is an opportunity to fete and honour writing by Australian women. When I sit down to write I am anchored by all of the books I have read. My sentences would not have been possible without the sentences of Christina Stead, Thea Astley, Elizabeth Jolley, Beverley Farmer, Kate Grenville, Gillian Mears, Helen Garner and the many other fine Australian writers that I have read and continue to read.”

In an interesting move Tiffany also announced that she would donate $10,000 of the $50,000 prize back to be split equally among the other five authors on the shortlist.
