Monster Odyssey 1: The Eye of Neptune
If you’re looking for a new release read for a boy aged 8 – 12 then book 1 in the new Monster Odyssey, The Eye of Neptune by Jon Mayhew is one to consider. I’m not in the target age group and I still enjoyed it.
Taking inspiration from Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea Monster Odyssey has us on an adventure with Prince Dakkar. Dakkar (who grows up to be Captain Nemo) has what adults may describe politely as ‘spirit’ and is sent from his kingdom to Europe to learn the skills needed to become a great leader.
After four years he has become comfortable with mentor Oginski and then it all changes. A giant squids is spotted in the ocean, Oginski starts acting suspiciously and Dakkar finds a strange submersible machine in the cellar. Add in a scientist, kidnappers, pirates, mer-people, a power-hungry ‘mega-mind’, Georgia (a girl the same age as Dakkar who won’t be told to ‘act like a girl’) and you’ve got a easy to read adventure filled novel.
The Eye of Neptune is out this month with book two in the series due for release in 2014.
