Do you have a novel inside of you that just has to be told? You’ve got a vivid imagination and a cool character name but not sure if you could set aside ten years to write a novel like Donna Tartt? Fast track your way to being an author with NaNoWriMo! Write a draft of a novel in a month and see where it takes you. National Novel Writing Month, affectionately called NaNoWriMo (for short…) runs over the month of November.
The challenge, should you choose to accept, is to write a 50,000 word draft of a novel! The cool thing is that aside from the word count, you can be as unrestrained and creative as you like! Scripts, books, poems and Fan Fics are totally welcome!! If you think 50,000 words is a staggering amount, it works itself out to being 1,667 words a day. Pretty cool huh, it’s roughly the length of The Great Gatsby and we all know how successful that is!
Entries are open for a November 1st start date, and to help budding authors, there is a team of published writers who deliver pep talks to help guide the way. Check out the talks from Veronica Roth, Tamora Pierce, Jim Butcher and more! And if you’re not aspiring to write in a room of one’s own, you can find a writing group in your area and catch up for a group writing sesh and coffee. The team at NaNoWriMo are totally dedicated to seeing you achieve the 50K goal and have tonnes of awesome resources to help you out with everything from planning to submitting your masterpiece!
And if you’re not convinced this is a good idea and still think writing 50K words in a month is totally crazy, then you’d be happy to know that The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, Water For Elephants by Sarah Gruen, Wool by Hugh Howry and so many more were all written for NaNoWriMo and published! So good luck, start writing!
