The Astrid Lindgren Reading Guides
The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for Children’s and Young Adult literature has released reading guides for novels written by 10 of the ALMA recipients.
The reading guides feature details on the author and novel, as well as discussion points and reading group guides. The ALMA award is an ongoing reading promotion. Director Helen Sigeland said in a statement, “Hopefully these reading guides will inspire teachers and librarians to include these books in curriculums, reading clubs and workshops.”
The Reading guides are available for free download here. Included in the guides are fantastic novels like The Nothern Lights by Philip Pulman (Also known under the film title The Golden Compass), Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and The Arrival by Shaun Tan.
Astrid Lindgren is one of Sweden’s most prolific children’s author, the Pippi Longstocking books saved her publishers from bankruptcy in 1947 and achieved incredible international popularity. Astrid was a writer, artist, editor and advocate for human rights. The Pippi Longstocking character and novels revolusionised the genre of children’s literature.
The ALMA is chosen by jury, looking for an author whose works are of high quality and in the spirit of Astrid Lindgren. Recipients include Guus Kuijer (2012), and Australian Authors Shaun Tan (2011) and Sonya Hartnett (2008).
