The Children’s Bookweek Bunyip

The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Bookweek starts this Sunday. The theme this year is “Champions Read”.

It got me thinking about the Bookweek parades at primary school.  I can’t remember all of my costumes, but there are two that that stand out…

Year 1, I was a witch with this great blue dress with suns and moons painted on it in gold glitter (what more could a 5 year old want!)

The other stand out – a Bunyip costume made by my mum, that I wore in year 3 or 4.

The inspiration for the costume came from one of my favourites as a kid, The Bunyip of Berkeley’s Creek.

It was made from large green garbage bags. The bags were cut and sewn onto a mesh background to make pants, a top and a full head mask – the result:

Did you have a stand out bookweek costume as a kid?
