The Song of Achilles
All the history/historical fiction I have read about Achilles has been primarily about the great battle of Troy and how he died. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller starts at the very begining….how he became the warrior. If you dont know your ancient Greek it may be a little hard to follow at first, but once you get into the rhythm of the story it will sweep you away.
The whole story revolves around Partoclus and Achilles. 2 princes. 1 exiled, 1 the greatest warrior that was ever 1/2 mortal. There is a prophecy (as there always was in those days) that he will be the greatest warrior that ever lived…..but there will be another called Pyrrhus that will take that title and after he is dead, Troy will fall.
Little does anyone know this saga of a prophecy will take 10 years to come to fruition…..And little did anyone know or expect that Pyrrhus is Achilles son, since Partoclus and Achilles have been lovers for 20 years or so.
There is so much packed into this book that it could have easily been drawn out to 2. Can’t wait for her next book.
